Vietnam – Hanoi & Nha Trang

Vietnam is still a less visited country and therefore also the perfect place to travel to if you want to see it before it becomes very popular.

Vietnam is probably most known for the war and not as known for being a beautiful destination for travelling.

The capital of Vietnam is Hanoi. This is a very exotic and lively city with electric cables hanging everywhere, scary traffic and a lot of beautiful sights and architecture.

With a lot of cars and scooters, crossing a road in Hanoi is really a matter of life and death. You’ll learn that you have to float through the traffic. When you eventually learn how to cross a street you’ll be able to explore all sorts of exciting streets and get lost. You might also get unlucky and end up in a street where deep-fried dogs are for sale. This is not a very unusual sight in Hanoi, but for someone who loves dogs this might be a little harsh to see. On my travels in Vietnam I came to know that eating dogs really isn’t something that all Vietnamese support.

If you find it difficult to explore the city on your own then an electric sightseeing bus might be the way to see the city. This sort of feels like a very typical tourist thing to do, but because of the lack of tourists it’s really not. This is definitely a great way to see the city and all its contrasts. The buildings in Hanoi are really special, if you look up you’ll notice that the second floor is totally different from the first floor. It almost looks like there are two different buildings on top of each other.

If you like theater then you should check out the Than long water puppet theater where you’ll get to see a water puppet show and listen to beautiful Vietnamese music.

Hanoi is an exhausting city, but an exciting place to visit for a few days. Nha Trang is a more vacation friendly city located on the south central coast of Vietnam.

Nha Trang is an up and coming tourist destination, and because it is on the coast this is a perfect spot to relax on the beach. There are also different tour companies that arrange boat trips and diving trips.

Nha Trang has a lot to offer. Ruins from earlier tribes, fishing villages, museums and the beautiful country side. Also, if you are interested in photography the city has a few galleries that exhibits photos in black and white of life in Vietnam.

A challenge with travelling to Vietnam is the language barrier. Most people do not speak English. This is especially challenging if you want to take a cab somewhere. I would recommend buying a map so that you can point where you want to go or use a gps on your phone.

If you are interested in war history then Vietnam is an exciting place. We have all seen American movies about the war, but in Vietnam you’ll get to see it from the Vietnamese perspective and learn about how horrible it was.

If you are looking for a country to visit that hasn’t been invaded by tourists just yet you should definitely consider Vietnam. Because of cheap food, entrance fees and cabs this is also a perfect place to travel for a backpacker. This is really an amazing country with beautiful nature and a different culture.
