A mini guide to Stavanger, Norway

Stavanger is located south-west in Norway. This is one of the oldest cities in Norway, and also the fourth largest city.

Stavanger is often called the capital of oil because this is where some of the large oil companies are located. Stavanger is a popular city for tourists during summer, even cruise ships visit Stavanger.

Located in the city center is a cathedral that was most likely built in 1100. The cathedral is really a beautiful building.

Sightseeing

The cathedral – The old cathedral located in the city center.

The colorful street – Øvre Holmegate is a unique part of town. All the buildings are painted in bright colors. This is also the place to look for cafe’s and vintage clothing.

The promenade – The wharf in Stavanger is hard to miss. Some of it even looks a little like Bergen with the old colorful buildings. This street has a lot of restaurants.

The geo park – This geo park is a very different and experimental city park with a lot of graffiti.

Preikestolen – This isn’t really in Stavanger, but it is in the area. This is one of the most visited attractions in this area. Preikestolen is a steep cliff which many people climb to see the beautiful view. The name means preacher’s pulpit in English.

Also, you should look for graffiti in the city. There is a lot of cool art hiding in different places.

Food

Ostehuset – A very nice café/bakery. Read more about it here.

The bluebird kaffebar – This is a cozy little coffee bar. Read more about it on Thursday.

Mongul India – A great Indian restaurant located close to the wharf.

Phileas Fogg – This restaurant is inspired by Jules Verns story about Phileas Fogg who travelled the world in 80 days. The interior is really nice, and they serve good food.
